No.11 Billy Budd

イメージ
This is a story in the 1970's British warship. The main character, Billy was a very good boy. However, due to the war, Billy get into the battleship, grudging without reason from the horizontal leader of it. Then the leader died, Billy was guilty and the captain tried to save him somehow.     It was a very painful and sad story. The main character, Billy is a very nice youth, as my story approached the end, my feelings have gone up. This book is made into a movie, so I definitely wanted to see it this winter vacation. I would like to read it to many people once. Herman Melville, Billy Budd, 2005, MACMILLAN READERS

No.10 The trumpet-major

イメージ
This book is about the southern England in the early 19th century. The content is a love story centered on the army's trumpet player, navigator of merchant ship and Anne of neighbor. Since the relationships of the characters frequently change, there is fun that the reader can read while anticipating the development of the story.                                                          I think that this book was very interesting as myself. And when a woman chooses a man like this story, I thought women would be attracted to men who are more free than men who are kind. When I finished reading, I sympathized with my gentle older brother, but It was emotional that she was connected with him. Thomas Hardy, The trumpet-major, 2005, MACMILLAN READERS

No.9 Good wives

イメージ
"Good wives" is a sequel to “Wakakusa Monogatari”. The eldest daughter, Meg 's married life, the second daughter, Joe' s life as a novelist are depicted. The scene where Joe supports her sister's fighting illness life is very impressive, and Joe's kindness is very moving.     I was very attracted to the personality of Joe very much. Joe supports her weak younger sister, but she felt sadness of losing that sister. However, beyond that sorrow, I thought that her way of living writing a wonderful book was really wonderful. I felt it was a work I wanted to read again and again. Louisa M. Alcott, Good wives, 2005, MACMILLAN READERS

No.8 The black turip

イメージ
A large amount of prize money was paid to those who bloomed black tulips, it was announced by the horticultural association. The young gardener of the hero was also working on cultivation, but a certain letter triggered a political fight.     I thought the setting that he or she could win the prize if he succeeded in cultivating a black tulip was very good. It was very attractive how the hero Cornelius and Rosa let her pass through. There was a suspense element and a romance element, so it was fun to read through. Alexandre Dumas, The black turip, 2005, MACMILLAN READERS

No.7 The signalman and the ghost at the trial

イメージ
This is a story of a ghost set in England 150 years ago. There are two works “The signalman” and “The ghost at the trial”, as it is also the title of the book. There are depictions of miserable accidents and scary illustrations.     I was very scared because I am not good at horror novels. However, I thought that people who like them and good people can read easily. I have little involvement with railway work and the court in everyday life, but I felt horror as I was drawn into the story very much. Charles Dickens, "The signalman and the ghost at the trial", 2005, MACMILLAN READERS

No.6 The last leaf and other stories

イメージ
The stage of this story is a corner of Washington Square West. There was a girl who was fucked by pneumonia here. Her name is Joanna. "What she needs to live is the intention of living, rather than treatment," the doctor said. After that, encounter with an old man will change her fate a lot. However, Joanna was unable to have the will because of his illness. This book has five short stories. "A good burblar", "The last leaf", "A lesson in love", "The jeweller's wife" and "The car is waiting". Especially I was touched by the last leaf of the second story. The grandfather 's message left by a girl who lost her hope of living was very impressive and beautiful. It is a highly recommendable book, so I would like many people to read it. O. Henry, 2005, "The last leaf and other stories", MACMILLAN READERS

No.5 Little Women

イメージ
This is a story of four sisters. They lived a poor but modestly enjoyable life with their mothers. It depicts the daily life of experiencing love and being absorbed in hobbies. While fighting, thinking about the existence of a father not at home at war, they grow up.  I was surprised to find out that this story is famous for youngsters in Japan. The level of the word was not so expensive and it was easy to read because the amount was just right. Since the genre of this book is not mystery or suspense, I thought that the point that I can read every time I find time is very good. If you have free time, please check it. Lousia M. Alcott, 2005, "Little Women", MACMILLAN READERS
